Social, Brotherhood, & Trips

SOCIAL, BROTHERHOOD, AND TRIPS
The brotherhood of Phi Kappa Psi at UC Irvine prides itself on being a well rounded chapter. Along with consistently attaining one of the top two GPA's among fraternities and being one of the most philanthropically active chapters with over 2,500 service hours, the brothers of Phi Psi hold the largest social events and maintain our brotherly bond with frequent brotherhood trips, retreats, and unique once in a lifetime opportunities.

MAJOR SOCIAL EVENTS
vegasnewyears

LAS VEGAS NEW YEARS
Although many Greeks on campus have began making the trek to Las Vegas annualy, Phi Psi has been doing it the longest and maintains the tradition of celebrating every start of the new year together. Each year the brotherhood caravans and makes the drive out to spend three nights in the same hotel all together on the strip. With the strip shut down for only pedestrians on New Year's Eve, over 80 brothers make the walk down to the Belaggio fountains to celebrate. This is one of Cal Kappa's most coveted traditions and remains a trip that every brother looks forward to each year.

 captainsball SEMIFORMAL AND FORMAL
Two of the most highlighted events are our invite only Semi-Formal and Formal. Each Fall Quarter, the brothers and their dates enjoy an overnight semi-formal at a nearby hotel. Past locations have included Laguna Beach and Coronado Island, where the night includes a formal dinner, dance, and much more. Once the weather gets hotter, the brothers head to Palm Springs every Spring Quarter for a two night formal with their dates. Also with a formal dinner and dance, the brothers of Phi Psi spend the days at a privately reserved pool and cap off the event with a video recapping the school year and honoring brothers with end of the year awards.
 partiessocial PARTIES AND EXCHANGES
While every fraternity holds these types of events, ask around and you'll soon find out that Phi Psi throws the largest and best social events on campus. Phi Psi tradiationally throws the first part of the year every Fall. All our parties are held at off-campus venues and guests are safely transported to and from campus by charter bus. Some of our most memorable parties each year include the Halloween Party in the Fall and Toga Party in the Winter. Additionally, the Phi Psi social schedule includes exchanges with individual sororities on campus and week-long exchanges with nightly events with Delta Gamma, Delta Delta Delta, and Kappa Alpha Theta (08-09).
 newport NEWPORT BEACH SOCIAL LIFE
As an alternative to on campus living, most brothers of Cal Kappa choose to live on the Peninsula in Newport Beach. Only 15 minutes from campus, the brothers regularly rent 10-15 houses within minutes from each other. This creates a unique opportunity for events in multiple locations, along with weekly "Day Parties" on Saturday's during the Spring Quarter. Additionaly, the chapter has rented out a house for the brothers to use during the Fourth of July weekend, when Newport Beach closes its streets for the celebration.
 SBexclusive SANTA BARBARA EXCLUSIVE
In addition to our Semi-Formal and Formal trips, Phi Psi has recently added the "Santa Barbara Exclusive" event. As the school year draws to a close in the Spring, brother Tait Gabrielsen has invited over 60 brothers and dates to spend Memorial Day Weekend at his private mansion in Santa Barbara. Located at the top of a secluded hill, the brothers camp out on the lawn looking over the entire city. Highlights from the event include the nightly "Blacklight Dungeon Parties" in the underground dungeon and the catered dinner on the final night.
 fightnight FIGHT NIGHT
Although an event that many other chapters now hold, the brothers of Phi Kappa Psi brought the very first fight night to UC Irvine many years ago and cemented it as a bi-annual tradition. With the smaller event held during Fall Rush and a larger Fight Night open to all in the Spring, brothers square off against each other in the ring. Demonstrating true brotherhood, the fighters train for months to prepare and fight all in good fun for the entertainment of the crowd and a different fundraiser each year. With no grudges held afterwards, the match-ups are highly anticipated as they are announced each year.

BROTHERHOODS AND TRIPS
cabo

CABO SAN LUCAS SPRING BREAK
Perhaps one of the most unique opportunities that may ever come your way is Phi Psi's Cabo Spring Break trip. Every year, our chapter attends the American Leadership Academy (ALA). Held at UCLA Phi Psi Alumni Jerry Nelson's compound and hotel in Cabo, each year members from Phi Psi chapters all over the nation are invited for this week-long program. The hotel is entirely shut down for only Phi Psi's who's costs are entirely covered by the ALA except for a plane ticket. While enjoying Cabo on the trip, Phi Psi undergrad's make life changing connections as they hear from successful Phi Psi alumni including execs and CEO's from very successful companies. In addition, the brothers are bussed down town each night and enjoy V.I.P. service for any Phi Psi at the famous El Squid Roe.

 dodgergame SPORTING EVENTS
Always looking to strengthen the brotherly bonds, the brothers of Phi Psi regularly charter a bus, cater some K.F.C., and head out to a local sporting event. Past events have included a UCLA football game, an annual Dodger game, and a Lakers game. These simple events often turn out to be the most fun as the brothers get to hop on a bus and get away for the day or night.
 pismobeach

PISMO BEACH RETREAT
Just as the school year kicks off each fall, our annual Pismo Beach trip comes right up. Held in October, both undergrads and alumni meet at the Surf and Turf at Pismo Beach and camp out for two nights. A weekend full of trucks, ATV's, and camping is always a great way to kick off the year. Often times, however, it turns out that the four-hour drive ends up being the best part as the brothers road trip it all the way there.

 catalina

CATALINA TRIP
Every summer, the brothers and alumni gather at the end of June for the annual Catalina trip. The brothers take a charter boat to Two Harbors where they camp on the island for four days. This get away is a low cost trip where many undergrads get to meet new alumni each year.

 thanksgivingdinner

THANKSGIVING DINNER
Every November, the undergrads of Phi Psi and their dates gather in a dining room on campus to share a Thanksgiving dinner together before they head home for a short break from school. This has been a Cal Kappa tradition for many years now and is always a great reminder of what Phi Psi means to all of us at UC Irvine.
